I like to tell myself that I coined the term "fancy doomsday prepper". I am not sure if that is true or not, and in all reality I just have some fun chickens on my homestead. But it does make me laugh from time to time... Picture me; post apocalyptic, harvesting the crops, carrying water from a nearby stream... AND gathering eggs with a crazy fancy puffy Polish hen by my side. Epic.
Truth be told, I love my chickens. I think it's amazing to be able to have a food source that also brings joy and a large amount of life skills and education. We started off with a few random chickens from the magical tractor supply bin. I quickly realized how much I enjoyed having them and set out to research different breeds and their benefits. Maybe it's that I am an artist, but I was immediately drawn to the eye-catching and unique. I ordered my first Tolbunt Polish hatching eggs on ebay from an NPIP certified farm in Texas. I was nervous, it was a long way for eggs to travel, but I ended up with 5 beautiful babies from that first incubation. From there, I spent two years cultivating a small flock from those few birds, selecting for form/feathering, leg color, and disposition. Today we now have five different breeds/breeding groups on our homestead: Black Copper Marans, Silkies, Ameracauna, Tolbunt Polish and Indian Runner ducks. There has been a learning curve, a lot of laughs and some tears, and some back-breaking work to get to this point, but I am pleased with the progress. Beautiful birds & colorful eggs - It's my ongoing art project.
I am now NPIP certified and continuing to work on breeding quality healthy birds. My children are learning the value of caring for a living animal, where their food comes from, life cycles and hard work. It's a beautiful thing. Nature is the best teacher.
